Video Documentary - The SInclair ZX80, ZX81, and Timex Sinclair 1000

Back in the day the ZX81 was my first real computer that I learnt BASIC programming on, because as it had no long term storage I had to type out every game's code before I could play anything (sometimes the power cable was loose and I'd lose it all and have to type it over before I could play). Some code was in hex which was even more difficult to type correctly. But back then this was really exciting stuff!

This video gives a nice overview of the evolution of these three models specially and how they differed from each other.

Catalogue retailer Argos has digitised all their catalogues since 1975 and put them online showing off old retro technology

While this contains a cross-section of over four decades’ styles, fads, and ephemera, it also gives the browser a fascinating look at a host of retrotechnology from a contemporary viewpoint rather than through the rose-tinted glasses of 2019. It's pages full of typewriters, calculators, cassette players, old computers, slide rules, CB radios, TV games, and office and home equipment.

The post at https://hackaday.com/2019/11/16/the-book-of-dreams-brings-back-all-your-memories/ does contain some quick links to interesting items.

A series of mysterious bleeps and bloops defined the early days of the internet - A familiar sound to many from the 1980's

Wow, I remember these sounds from long before IBM PC's had appeared, long before WiFi, and in fact long before graphical browsers. We started out on bulletin board systems (BBS) which were all text and the 300 baud speed rates were a bit faster than Morse code.

I was also in tune with the sounds and how they were doing but had no technical insight into what was actually happening. This article delves a bit deeper into that and ends with a symphony of modem connection sounds <img class=">

How to play Commodore 64 games on Linux using Vice emulator

Commodore 64 was one of the best-selling home computer systems of its time. Sadly, that time is long passed, and the machine isn’t in production anymore. The only way to enjoy it in modern times is with emulation. On Linux, you can play Commodore 64 games through the Vice emulator. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to set up C64 emulation, how to save your game, configure joysticks, and more!

Note though as usual no C64 ROM is distributed with the emulator so you need to "find" your own one.

@raphtheman Hey, if you're interested, I have a huge listing of DOS-related developer tools on my website https://theouterlinux.gitlab.io/website and in the Projects section, there is a #python script (img2qb) I made for converting modern image formats to #quickbasic DATA arrays and it also produces a "preview" image that you can use in more modern engines but would use the actual colors of the chosen SCREEN mode. And, I have #gimp color paletes for various game systems here: https://www.deviantart.com/theouterlinux/art/GIMP-color-palettes-from-retro-systems-anime-etc-760564991 #retro #dos

#MrRescue is a #retro firefighting #game.

In Mr. Rescue you play as a firefighter who rescues people from burning buildings. Each screen has several floors with fire, enemies, power ups, and people to save. Rescuing people is easy, simply throw them outside of the building for the ground crew to catch them. Be quick though, as lingering for too long will cause Mr. Rescue's suit to overheat!

A Commodore 64 Clone With a Working Retro Keyboard Will Finally Arrive This Year for US$120 - Will Include an HDMI Port

The C64, as the new console is simply known, has the same footprint as the original Commodore 64 that was first released back in 1982. The keyboard appears to have the same layout (and hopefully uses key switches that emulate the feel of the original’s) and that glorious beige finish that screams, “boring ‘80s computer.” It also comes with BASIC pre-installed, and it can be switched between modes that make it function like the classic C64, or even its predecessor, the Commodore Vic 20.

But that’s where the similarities end. The new C64 includes an HDMI port so it can be easily connected to modern TVs, but it maxes out at 720P, so don’t expect to finally be able to play Impossible Mission in 4K. It also includes the same collection of games that the C64 Mini has, but to improve gameplay the accurately awful throwback joystick has been upgraded with new micro switches, so hopefully, it’s a little more responsive than its predecessor.

This free ‘time machine’ app turns your old black and white photos to colour

Colourise uses artificial intelligence to act as a ‘time machine’ for old photos. It was developed as part of a ‘hackathon’ contest in Singapore that used deep learning to effectively colourise old images. Now it’s been launched on the web for anyone to use with their own pictures. The team behind the tool say they do not store any photos that users upload to the service.

I've tried it on a bunch of 1960's black and white photos I have and most of them came out very well. Only one photo had a stretch of gravel road identified as green grass but apart from it is impressive. There is a link at the bottom of the article below that will take you to the app.

Behind the scenes on Thunderbirds 1965: a project to produce three new episodes of the classic television show Thunderbirds - exactly the way it was done in the 60s!

I fondly remember watching this series very regularly when TV first came out in South Africa probably in the late 1970s. The fact that such trouble has been taken to reproduce it in this way means I was not the only one, and it is a real tribute to the original innovators back in the 1960s.
